For the record, I’ve got no problem with the new LeBron ad. Ad agencies and companies take noble notions and ideas and deftly play on our emotions. Like that Louis Vuitton ad a while back wondering if it was the destination or the journey that mattered most.
But LeBron asks a rather difficult question:
Should I be who you want me to be?
Should Lebron James–or for that matter anybody else–be who others want him to be, regardless of whatever he sees of himself? People do incredibly stupid crap because they think that’s what others want them to do–it’s as if they’ve ceded critical thinking to others.
(And yes, the whole PR thing was bad, but in the pantheon of stupid things that pro athletes have done, this barely rates a mention.)
So LeBron thinks for himself, and asks a tough question. Sounds like maturation to me. And a question we should all be asking ourselves.
