I sometimes can’t understand why people don’t like jazz, or think it’s boring. And I might have hit upon why. There is, I guess, an expectation that the things we enjoy come to us, and not the other way around. For me, you have to come to jazz, be active in listening to it, to what the musicians are doing on stage, to hear and engage with the music. What may seem passive is terribly active, vibrant.
